It’s been 4 months now that I’ve been iPad-only.
When I first told a few people I was going iPad-only, pretty much every single person was skeptical. So was I, to be perfectly honest. I knew I could do light work, but didn’t think I could do real work. Not in a practical way anyhow.
I was definitely wrong about that.
The bulk of my work is communicating, writing, and reviewing. I have to write and edit some documents, and review songs, videos and images - but I’m not really creating them. I rarely ever have to edit a graphic myself, and when I do, I can easily access a proper computer if needed.
But for writing, reviewing, and communicating (most of my day) - I don’t think I’ve ever had a better tool. My MacBook Air was probably the best computer I’ve ever owned, but for regular, daily use… I don’t really need a computer anymore.
When I need to sit down and write, I have an external keyboard, but when I want to get up and head to a meeting, I just grab the iPad.
I know a few others who have tried something similar, only to give up after a few days or a few weeks, but the trick is to find the right tools and/or apps.
I’ll skip over the typical apps like Pages, since those tend to be the obvious choices - instead, I’ll just focus on 2 specific apps that make my iPad-only life possible: Evernote, and GoodReader.
Anyone who knows me, knows how much I depend on Evernote. It’s my life in digital form.
I use Evernote as my digital file cabinet, my to-do list, my digital vision board, and my brain’s external memory. And by the way, you can’t get a better tool for taking notes in a meeting. I record the audio of the meeting, while typing up a few notes, and occasionally snapping pics of the whiteboard or slides to store in the same note. If there’s something I need to remember that I didn’t jot down, I can just pull up the note, and check the pictures or review the audio.
Yeah… like I said, Evernote is my everything.
The other app, GoodReader, is everything you could possibly want in a file manager. It connects to your Dropbox, Box, Google Docs, your FTP server, and a few other services, allowing you to download files to your iPad and read, and comment/annotate files within the app. More impressive than that though, you can download zip files and unzip them within GoodReader. If you’re going iPad-only, this is a feature you need - believe me.
One of the coolest things I didn’t even realize until recently, was the option to also upload files to these different services it connects to. I recently purchased a new WordPress theme for my homepage, and was waiting until the next time I was at a computer to upload it. Instead, I realized I was able to download the theme, unzip it, and upload the theme folder to my FTP server, all within GoodReader - then just switch over to Mobile Safari and set it up.
I’ll likely end up picking up another computer sometime in the near future for the occasional heavy-usage scenarios, but for the bulk of my work, the iPad is perfect.
I never thought I’d last 4 months, but after taking the time to find the right apps, and figuring out smarter ways of working, it’s the closest to the ideal-setup I’ve ever had.
It’s not for everyone, but if you break down your day, and see that the bulk of your work involves writing, reviewing and communicating - it might just be the best tool you’ve ever used.
